Designing Event Page to Increase Player Engagement
Tatsumeeko (formerly Tatsu) regularly holds time-limited event to play using their Tatsu Bot discord. However, users frequently face difficulty in participating, and thus discourages them to enjoy the event game despite all the fun rewards.
Result
Increase of user engagement and retention.
Easy to use and the instructions are helpful both for the new and repeat users.
Research Approach
As Tatsumeeko has a large community discord server, we conducted a survey and collated feedbacks within the Discord Server to get data on the users pain points.

Project Goal
After having conducted the research, we discussed with the relevant teams of the findings and aligned our goal in the project with two things:
Get user acquainted with horizontal mobile mode
Increase player knowledge and engagement with Tatsumeeko’s seasonal Events
With the goals in mind, we came up with a cross-functional execution plan as follows:
UX Principle and Comparative Analysis
In designing the UX and UI of the new page, we utilized two laws of UX as a guide:
Jakob's Law
Users will transfer expectations they have built around one familiar product to another that appears similar.
Aesthetic-Usability Effect
An aesthetically pleasing design creates a positive response in people’s brains. People are more tolerant of minor usability issues when the design of a product or service is aesthetically pleasing.
Therefore, making design decisions based on the familiarity of our users with mobile games enhances intuitive navigation of this new system, all the while being convincingly usable with pleasant UI design.

Defining User Persona
To optimize the development without investing too much time on the user, we created 2 provisional personas based on the data gathered from the survey and educated observation of our users. These provisional personas are intended to help in making design decisions and suitable user flows from higher level.
Knowing the lack of details, it’s used carefully to not be relied for in-depth design decisions and subsequently tested for validation.

User Flow

To better illustrate the scenario to the teams and keep myself on track when designing the page flows, I created this user flows that shows the discoverability of the event summary page and its overall functionality.
Since both personas have similar pain points and needs, the flow’s merged with few additions of both differing usages.
Getting user to notice Events

The first time user logged into Tatsu.gg's dashboard (home page), they'll be greeted by the event popup. This way it catches the user's attention right off the bat and when it's closed, user can still access the Event Page through the banner on the dashboard's home page.
Event Page: The Event Main Hub

Event Page has all of the ongoing Events activities with access to the Event Shop. The page’s visual theme will change depending on the Event theme, but the layout compositions and features stays the same.
Event Shop: Buyable Event Items with event tokens

Mobile Version

For the mobile version, we used the horizontal mode to make the experience similar with mobile games.
Aftermath Evaluation
Further improvements to prioritize after monitoring for a month are the website loading optimization, and addition of player overall activities statistics.
